Salsa

Salsa is a lively Latin partner dance blending Cuban folklore, African rhythms and jazz. Beginners should start with the basic step and the 'one-two-three, five-six-seven' count. GoDance has beginner salsa lessons.

For the basic step and technique a partner isn't required — much is drilled solo. Leading, turns and partner routines come later, but you can start alone at home.

Yes — the basic step, rhythm and body work are convenient to learn from video. You need some space and smooth-soled shoes; moves can be slowed and repeated.

Comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict movement, and smooth-soled shoes for easy turns (or socks on a smooth floor). A heel isn't required to start.

The basic step and count come in a couple of weeks; confident solo technique and turns in 1–2 months. Partner routines need extra practice with a partner.

Salsa is faster and more energetic, with more turns and an 8-count with a pause. Bachata is slower and more romantic, focused on hip figure-eights and close lead.
