Question 1

What is Contemporary and is it suitable for beginners?

Accepted Answer

Contemporary is a modern dance combining freedom of movement, technique and emotional expression. It suits beginners: basic lessons work with body weight, breath and smooth transitions. GoDance has beginner lessons.

Question 2

Do I need flexibility for Contemporary?

Accepted Answer

Flexibility helps, but you can start without it — many movements rely on natural plasticity and floorwork. Regular stretching will widen your range and refine your lines over time.

Question 3

Can I learn Contemporary from scratch at home?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the style fits home practice: you need some space and, ideally, a non-slip floor. Movements can be repeated and slowed from video.

Question 4

What should I wear for class?

Accepted Answer

Soft, stretchy clothing that doesn't restrict movement; people usually dance barefoot or in socks for floor contact. Your space should allow moving and going down to the floor.

Question 5

How long does it take to learn the style?

Accepted Answer

A basic feel for movement and technique comes in 1–2 months; expressiveness and freedom grow through improvisation practice. Contemporary develops gradually, so consistency matters.

Question 6

How is Contemporary different from modern and ballet?

Accepted Answer

Contemporary is freer than classical ballet and leans on individuality, weight work and improvisation. Unlike modern, it's more eclectic and focused on emotion in the moment.
