Manila’s all-queer crew Femme MNL wins Megacrew gold at HHI 2026 with “Resurgence,” redefining hip-hop choreography.
Manila-based all-queer dance collective Femme MNL made history at the 2026 Hip Hop International World Championship, taking gold in the Megacrew Division. The win was more than a medal — it reset expectations for one of the most demanding categories in competitive street dance.
HHI brought together crews from over 50 countries. In Megacrew, groups of 15 to 40 dancers must move as one, and the category often separates amateurs from elites. While many crews relied on explosive athleticism and stunts, Femme MNL chose a different path. Their routine, titled “Resurgence,” blended traditional hip-hop foundations, jazz-funk, and interpretive contemporary dance. The choreography used the group’s size to build shifting, organic formations that evoked biological evolution and structural metamorphosis.
Judges and industry experts praised the crew’s “formation fluidity.” Past Megacrew routines often lost visual impact during transitions between complex stunts. Femme MNL solved that with “shadow choreography,” keeping auxiliary dancers in constant subtle motion even when they weren’t in focus. The stage stayed alive throughout, boosting their Artistic Impression score.
The soundtrack was just as distinctive. A custom fusion of traditional Filipino percussion and modern industrial trap gave the performance a sound that was both personal and universal. Combined with structured, monochromatic silhouettes, the whole presentation earned top marks for Costume and Concept.
Femme MNL’s victory also carries cultural weight. As an all-queer collective, they have challenged hyper-masculine tropes that have long shaped hip-hop dance. Their movement vocabulary — fluid, graceful, and non-linear — subverted expectations of what a winning Megacrew set should look like. One commentator put it simply: “Femme MNL didn’t just perform a dance; they forced the entire industry to evolve its definition of strength.”
The result caps a five-year shift in the Megacrew division. Speed and maximalist stunts once ruled; now concept and cohesion lead the scoring. The “Femme MNL Effect” is already influencing predictions for 2027, with scouts expecting more narratively driven, avant-garde routines across the qualifying circuit.
