There are so many directions and styles in the dance industry. One that can rightfully be considered very unique and mesmerizing is the Vogue dance style. This dance consists of a set of movements that imitate the poses, walk, and facial expressions of models from runways and Vogue magazine.
It is outrageous, bright, and unforgettable. The hallmark of Vogue is fast, sharp hand movements, affected mannered walks, posing, playing with emotions, static poses (freezing in place for a few seconds during the dance), falls, spins, acrobatics, and elements from hip-hop.
A special feature of this dance is the dancer freezing for a few seconds in a static model pose. This dance attracts attention because its technique is beautiful, sexy, daring, and unusual.
This dance originated in the 1960s in the Harlem prison located in Manhattan. African-American and Latino gay inmates entertained themselves by mimicking the walk of runway models. At first, it was simple imitation of poses, but later all movements were done to music with a certain rhythm and pauses.
This style became a favorite dance and won the hearts of members of the gay culture, who, due to their social status, were prohibited from participating in fashion shows. The dance became so popular among sexual minorities that they began to hold entire Vogue balls, where they took on the role of models. At these balls, they emulated the image of models, sewed outfits, walked the runway, and felt like stars. This dance, with the changes brought to it, became a real hit at private gay parties.
Through dance, they expressed themselves, showcasing their skill and talent. Thus, over time, a real subculture emerged that copied all the benefits of the high fashion world. This subculture had its own awards, balls, runways, and fashion houses.
But this dance style gained universal love and popularity thanks to singer and actress Madonna. In 1990, she released a black-and-white music video titled "Vogue." In the video, she used movements from the Vogue style.
She breathed new life into the dance, showed it from her perspective, in her performance, and it began to gain momentum among those who wanted to learn to move the same way. Nowadays, Vogue is very popular among young people and beyond. It is danced by both men and women, both the older generation and children. Every year, more and more lovers of this style appear.
The Vogue dance direction is performed to music in the House rhythm. This dance has undergone many changes in the modern world, resulting in several substyles of Vogue, namely:
— The posing style, also called Vogue Old Way, the classic style and the very original version of Vogue danced before 1990;
— Vogue New Way style, characterized by hand movements, static freezes, stretches, and body balancing (this style appeared after 1990);
— The style expressing femininity itself - Vogue Femme, emphasizing sexuality through smooth movements and body curves;
— Acrobatic style Vogue Dramatic, consisting of complex acrobatic elements with good flexibility. It is a whole show dance where the dancer's physical condition is essential.
The Vogue style is unique and multifaceted. Over the years, it has gained even more recognition and love worldwide. It can be danced on both small and large dance floors. It looks indescribably beautiful when many people dance Vogue on stage. The energy of outrageousness and grace emanating from the dancers can lift the mood of any audience member.
