Viral Dance Drama: NIT Durgapur's "Chikni Chameli" Performance Sparks Online Firestorm

The world of dance is often a stage for expression, joy, and sometimes, unexpected drama. This week, a video from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Durgapur has taken social media by storm, thrusting a student dance performance into the global spotlight and igniting a fervent debate on campus culture and artistic boundaries.

The incident, which occurred on August 22, 2026, during a freshers' induction program, saw a group of enthusiastic students light up the stage with a lively performance to the popular Bollywood track "Chikni Chameli." The energy was palpable, the crowd cheering, until a professor, identified as Dr. Manika Saha from the Electrical Engineering department, stepped in to halt the proceedings. Her intervention, captured on video and widely circulated by education consultant Gourob Roy on Instagram, showed her questioning the students about the approval for their dance and its suitability for the event.

The professor's remarks, including asking "Is it a joke? Is it an introduction? Entertainment? You people better know the class," brought the auditorium to a stunned silence. This abrupt stop sparked an immediate and intense reaction across social media platforms. The video quickly went viral on August 26, 2026, triggering a split online debate that has kept netizens buzzing.

On one side, many users have staunchly defended the professor, arguing that an induction program is a formal institutional event that demands a certain level of decorum and adherence to guidelines. They suggested that the song choice, and perhaps the choreography, might have been inappropriate for such a setting, especially with junior students present. Some echoed sentiments about maintaining institutional values and standards, emphasizing that performances reflect on the college's image.

Conversely, a significant portion of the online community has criticized the professor's public intervention, viewing it as an overreaction and a stifling of student creativity and freedom of expression. Many felt that such concerns, if valid, should have been addressed privately rather than in front of an audience, which could potentially dampen the students' confidence and enthusiasm for future participation. The debate also touched upon the broader issue of "moral policing" on campuses and the balance between administrative oversight and student autonomy in cultural activities.

This viral moment at NIT Durgapur serves as a potent reminder of the dynamic tension between tradition and modernity, structure and spontaneity, within academic institutions. It highlights how a single dance performance can become a flashpoint for discussing deeper questions about respect, freedom, and the evolving nature of campus culture in the digital age.
