Waving Dance: What Is It and How to Master the Wave Style

Waving is a young dance style that originated in Paris.

Known worldwide as 'the wave', Wavedance is a mesmerizing form of movement.

The style emerged in the late 1990s, thanks to a group of dancers who were skilled in multiple dance styles.

Watching a Waving dancer, it seems as if they are painting a picture in space with their body.

This style, originally called 'Wavedance', was created by a group of dancers.

A pair of dancers from the group, inspired by ocean waves, decided to mimic the movement and translate it onto their bodies.

The core idea was to simulate a wave or a pulse of energy traveling through the dancer's body.

The result was a striking combination of large, sweeping movements with fluid pelvic motions.

Thus began the birth of a modern dance style called 'Waving', built on flawless technique and emotional expression.

Unlike other hip-hop styles, Waving was born not on the streets but in nightclubs.

The creators of the style wanted to avoid limitations on personal and creative freedom, so they deliberately left out elements from the Electric style.

As a result, Waving became extremely smooth and fluid, yet also dynamic and energetic.

Other dancers from the group saw what the pioneers had created and modernized the dance.

This led to a new range of movements originating specifically from the dancer's hips.

In Waving, the hips are highly active, as if the dance's energy and wave-like quality emanate from them.

The dancers chose to emphasize the hips because this body part adds a sensual dimension to the dance.

Thanks to its versatility and expressive possibilities, Wavedance spread rapidly across America and Europe.

Its immense popularity allows Waving to continuously evolve and adapt to the times.

Today, wave movements are used as standalone elements in other dance styles.

A Waving dancer needs excellent physical condition, a supple and flexible body.

The dancer's movements must create a continuous flow, with all parts of the body actively engaged.

They create various wave patterns, differing in amplitude and direction.

Another characteristic of Waving is the illusion of an impending fall.

It seems as if the dancer is about to fall, yet they somehow manage to maintain balance.

Although the dance involves the whole body, isolation is key—the ability to move each body part independently while others remain still.

Substyles of Waving:

1. Roll waves — a wave that transitions from joint to joint with rotational elements, engaging multiple body parts including the chest, head, stomach, and others.

2. Water waves — a wave that appears to float with the current using calm, smooth movements at slow speed.

3. 3D waves — a wave with many unexpected stops over a small distance.

4. Set waves — increasing amplitude with each wave, like the ocean.

5. Mirror waves — hand wave motions creating a mirror effect.

Beginners start with the 'arm wave' — the simplest movement in this style.

To perform it, break down the wave from the right hand to the left into smaller movements, bending each joint slowly and sequentially.
