Twerk: History of the Dance Style

Twerk (twerking, booty dance) is a modern and unique dance style, a trendy new discovery that has gained immense popularity relatively recently. The style is based on rhythmic, sexy movements of the buttocks, as well as manipulations of the hips and abdomen, performed by dancers to popular music.

Naturally, its provocative and risqué execution draws criticism, especially from the older generation. Many find the style confusing or even indecent.

But times change, and old styles inevitably give way to fresh ideas that align with new principles and norms. That is why twerk has so many fans today, particularly among men.

Girls who master these alluring moves often attract heightened attention from men and even the media. You're probably curious about where and how this unusual dance originated. Let's take a look at the earliest pages of twerk history.

Interpretation of the style's name

As you know, a memorable, short, and original name that "hooks" consumers is a key element of promotional art. The same applies to dance. Morphologically, the name "twerk" is linked to the word "jerk," meaning to pull or jerk (also known in youth slang as "self-abuse").

The letter "t" at the beginning comes from "twist" – to twist. Thus, the dance's name does not reflect its essence but merely describes its movements. This technique uses esotericism – a word understood only by those in the know.

This often appeals to young people, who quickly absorb such innovations, forming their own culture that is unique, unconventional, and rebellious.

History of Twerk

Twerk originated long ago in ancient African tribes. African women used these intimate dances to attract men. Typically, performing these moves implied a continuation in private if the man reciprocated.

There is also a belief that African women used this method to cure infertility or simply stay in shape, given the active hip and abdominal movements. However, this theory is less common.

Later, twerk arrived in North America with Black slaves, but due to its uninhibited nature, it struggled to gain popularity worldwide. In 1995, youth rapper Cheeky Blakk recorded a track called "Twerk Something" in New Orleans. This new and unusual music gave twerk a boost, and many heard about the style for the first time. In 2009, a group of dancers formed to promote the style.

A video of their dance posted on YouTube became one of the site's biggest successes, even though the camera shook as much as the dancers' buttocks.

By 2013, twerk had amassed a huge audience and gradually spread to all countries. The dance has actually existed for over 20 years, but it only became widely known relatively recently. Its bold and sexy moves quickly attracted young people.

Solo teams and studios teaching twerk began to emerge, along with idols and professionals in the style. Later, battles and large-scale twerk competitions were held: the dance was recognized as a distinct style, its image in society transformed, and past criticisms could no longer hinder its rapid popularization.

Twerk is a relatively niche and "young" direction, so it has no well-defined official variants yet (only local colloquial names for moves).
