Tap dance originated in the late 19th to early 20th century from Irish and African American traditions. For practice, wear comfortable, confidence-boosting clothes. The most crucial element is shoes—choose wisely for comfort and safety.
Tap dance (or tap) is a dance that originated in the late 19th or early 20th century. This happened due to the mixing of various national cultures, which was quite characteristic of that time.
It mainly evolved from Irish dance and African American dance traditions.
This style quickly gained popularity thanks to numerous American musicals and its lively, energetic nature. Today, the dance remains popular and is performed worldwide.
People love tap for the opportunity to unwind mentally. It's also a great way to strengthen yourself and your body, as it provides excellent cardio exercise. Naturally, for such training, you need appropriate clothing!
For regular rehearsals, the outfit is more or less straightforward. You need something comfortable for active movement—not too hot, too tight, or too loose. It's also very important how you feel mentally in what you wear.
Agree, you can't fully let loose if you don't see a nicely dressed person in the mirror reflection; something will still hold you back when performing certain bold moves. It's better to wear something that makes you 100% confident.
Tap costumes can have many variations! They look similar to ballroom dance costumes: for men, pants that may flare at the bottom, and for women, dresses, skirts, and blouses.
For women, the bottom is usually short so it doesn't interfere with dancing, but in your own costume, you are free to choose the characteristics of each element. The main thing is that it doesn't hinder performance. Often, during costume design, only the aesthetic component is considered, but that's not entirely correct—you need to feel comfortable on stage!
And finally, the most important piece of clothing, without which this dance wouldn't exist, is shoes! Choosing a quality pair is the top priority for any dancer (both professional and beginner). Proper shoes provide comfort, safety, and anatomical support for the foot. This can greatly affect not only your dance but also the health of your feet.
Shoes are usually made of either leather or canvas. The former is more expensive and durable, while the latter is cheaper and lighter. Beginners will find these most comfortable. Colors vary, so you have plenty of choices.
Special attention should be paid to the sole. If you see shoes with a rubber sole, it's better to skip that pair. Rubber will stick to the floor, restrict movement, and create hazardous situations.
The sole can be split or full. Beginners are advised to choose full soles for better foot support, while split soles offer greater mobility and flexibility. These are mainly chosen by professional dancers.
