Selena Gomez, Becky G and Benny Blanco Drop Cumbia ‘Te Olvido (La La)’ — a Love Letter to Mexican American LA

Selena Gomez is back in Spanish-language music, with Becky G and Benny Blanco on a cumbia celebration rooted in Los Angeles.

The single, “Te Olvido (La La),” was released Friday as the latest preview of Blanco’s upcoming album Hermoso, due Aug. 14. Blanco calls it a tribute to the Spanish-language music that shaped him. “I grew up in an area with a large Latin population,” he told El País. “You’d get in the car and Jeanette would be playing; in another car, cumbia would be on.” He was fascinated by “the drums and how the rhythms interacted with each other.”

That influence drives the track: instead of urbano or Latin pop, Blanco builds it around cumbia, pairing Gomez and Becky G with a rhythm that has become a staple of celebrations across Mexico and among Mexican American communities in the U.S.

The video was shot in Los Callejones (Santee Alley) in downtown Los Angeles. It follows the trio through one of the city’s best-known Latino commercial districts, with street vendors, storefronts, dancers, images of la virgen de Guadalupe and classic lowriders. For Gomez, it’s her most significant return to Spanish since her Grammy-nominated 2021 EP Revelación, with “De Una Vez,” “Baila Conmigo” with Rauw Alejandro and “Selfish Love” with DJ Snake. Since then she has released Spanish-language collabs, including “Ojos Tristes” with Blanco on their 2025 joint album I Said I Love You First. “Te Olvido (La La)” is her first new standalone Spanish-language single in years.

The release also follows the Oscar-nominated Emilia Pérez, which sparked criticism over its portrayal of Mexico and Gomez’s Spanish. This project centers on celebrating her heritage through music.

Selena and Becky G share a last name and similar roots. Becky G has spent recent years moving between pop, música mexicana and Latin music, and is currently a special guest on select dates of Karol G’s “Viajando por el Mundo TropiTour” across North America. Blanco told Caracol Radio that Latin music has always been in his soul since he was young, and he felt “blessed” to work with so many artists.

With Mexican American identity at the center of both sound and visuals, “Te Olvido (La La)” feels less like a crossover experiment and more like a love letter to the neighborhoods that inspired Blanco’s first Spanish-language album.
