Salsa originated in Cuba and spread worldwide over the last half century. Influenced by Hollywood theatricality, it became one of the hottest shows on global stages.

Salsa Los Angeles, or LA Salsa, also called "Salsa on 1," was created by the dance studio "Massalsabrava," founded by Luis Vazquez, Joby Vazquez, one of their spouses, and two brothers: Francisco and Johnny.

LA Salsa demands precise execution; acrobatic elements are performed to showcase the couple's skill. Improvised solo performances are rare in this style. However, they do exist and are called shines — variations danced alone, independently of a partner. There is a strong emphasis on both female and male styling.
