Ragga Jam for Beginners: Fundamentals and Key Rules

Many beginners who decide to start dancing are overwhelmed by questions like: 'Will I be able to do it? Should I have started when I was younger? Is it too late now?'

Of course, every beginner dancer feels fear—it's completely normal. But there are dance styles that don't require intricate steps, exceptional flexibility, or prior training. One such style is the popular Ragga Jam.

Ragga Jam is a new dance style that has been gaining love, recognition, and popularity worldwide in recent years.

Ragga Jam is an energetic, passionate dance that blends hip-hop with elements of African, Jamaican, and Antillean dances. It is performed to reggae or hip-hop music.

Essentially, Ragga Jam is like female hip-hop, but with one key difference: it isn't vulgar. While popular among women, this style has also gained a following among men.

This style is accessible to everyone thanks to its natural, light, and athletic movements.

The most important thing in Ragga Jam is a love for dancing and the desire to dance.

The main movements in Ragga Jam are:

  • The 'bounce' – a hip-hop element where you rock your torso forward and back while keeping your back straight;
  • Shakes – hip movements that create a vibrating effect.

From the outside, the dance looks like large, sweeping movements with various swings, waves, and chest and hip shakes, all performed while bouncing.

Ragga Jam is a kind of fitness dance. It engages all muscle groups, with a primary focus on the legs, since most moves are done with bent knees. This style lets you get in shape while having fun to the music.

You can learn this style either in a studio with a choreographer or on your own at home—after all, everything is available online nowadays. There are video courses for both beginners and advanced dancers.

For those who decide to take up dancing, a systematic approach is key. Sessions should be regular, ideally two or more times per week.

Ragga Jam is so intuitive that even a beginner can start creating their own combinations to reggae or hip-hop after just a few months of practice.

For practice, wear comfortable sportswear—preferably loose-fitting. It's best to have wide pants, a T-shirt, comfortable athletic shoes, or jazz shoes (special dance shoes).

The key is to be in a good mood, listen to the rhythm, and feel the music; otherwise, the dance will lack soul and emotion.

This dance style teaches you to express your emotions, helps you open up, and frees you from inhibitions.

With this dance, you can be sure that on any dance floor, all eyes will be on the Ragga Jam dancer, because this style teaches you to dance beautifully and seductively, and onlookers simply won't be able to take their eyes off the mesmerizing movements of your hips.
