Pole Dance: Evolution and Transformation Over the Decades

Pole dance is now rightly considered one of the most relevant dance styles sweeping across the world. Initially, attitudes toward this dance direction were highly skeptical, as it emerged from Canadian strip clubs back in 1980.

But if you dig deeper, you'll find that pole dance has roots in ancient India, where yoga at that time bore many similarities to what is now known as pole dancing.

The discipline name 'Mallakhamb,' which translates to 'gymnasts of the pole,' further confirms the similarity. Based on the valuable experience of ancient Indians, acrobats quickly adopted a series of gymnastic elements, thereby improving their pole technique.

Despite many borrowings, acrobats also introduced many of their own elements that beginners in pole dance still use today. Later, pole dance returned to foreign strip clubs.

Owners of major establishments used this dance style for their own selfish purposes, as an easy way to attract and then seduce clients.

Pole dance quickly outgrew such establishments, as fitness trainers became interested in it. Today, pole dance is not a shameful, lewd dance but a set of gymnastic exercises that keep your body toned, strengthening not only muscles but also character.

Looking at the development of pole dance in our country, it appeared much later than abroad. That's why people here are so skeptical about this dance style. Nevertheless, the situation improves every year; female athletes from our country are now actively participating in similar events and even winning prizes.

Also regarding support for pole dance in our country, we can mention the relatively recently established pole dance federation. The organization unites representatives from different Russian cities and holds annual competitions in each city. The best of the best represent our country in international contests.

In the Russian Federation, the first most significant event was the Russian Championship Miss Pole Dance Russia 2008. The championship took place in St. Petersburg in 2008. This event became the starting point for the development of pole dance in Russia.

A year later, the Russian Pole Dance Championship took place. Girls were selected across three cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Vladivostok. Only 32 participants made it to the finals, showcasing their mastery of the pole and quickly winning over the audience. The pole dance federation is rapidly developing, and by 2019, qualifying trials were held in over 20 Russian cities.
