Recently, our OMVIRA Tribal Academy conducted a tribal experiment that culminated in a student performing a solo piece at the Gala concert of the Perm Tribal Festival — a routine she choreographed herself.
How did we make this happen in just 3 months? We followed three simple steps.
This tribal experiment involved a young woman named Lena. Like many others, Lena came to one of my trial tribal classes, and that’s how we met. I immediately saw inspiration, drive, and a spark in her eyes! That’s why I chose Lena for this journey.
And we began preparing…
The first month was dedicated to building foundational technique. This was the hardest part because tribal is an unconventional style. Normally, it takes 2–3 months for the body to automatically hold the tribal posture. But Lena, by diligently doing her homework, managed to achieve this in just one month!
The second month was all about creativity. We put together combinations, watched tons of dance videos from different styles, brainstormed ideas for the choreography, and more.
I fondly remember how my heart swelled when Lena would come to class and show me combinations she had invented herself, along with photos of costume pieces and accessories for her future outfit. Our enthusiasm knew no bounds! We fueled each other with energy and motivation, wanting to work nonstop!
The third month was reserved for actually crafting the choreography. We refined the sections, concepts, moods, and costume details… This was the most nerve-wracking month — after all, Lena’s first solo performance was approaching! Emotions were running high, so we had to pull ourselves together and simply keep working — on both the dance and ourselves.
Lena followed all my instructions to a T, practiced at home, and showed discipline and responsibility toward her classes… and the results spoke for themselves! Lena delivered a stunning solo performance at a major festival, with a dance she created entirely on her own!
So, is it possible to learn tribal from scratch and, after just 3 months of training, create a solo dance and perform it on stage? Yes!
And how long into your dance training would you be ready to hit the stage?
