A Deep Dive into the Origins and Main Styles of Tribal Dance

Today, there is a huge variety of dance styles, each with its own unique characteristics such as speed, movement technique, costumes, and how they engage with the audience.

Jamila Salimpour created her own dance style, focusing on mesmerizing movements that could be performed to any music. Her father inspired her to develop this new style by telling her about the Hawaiian dances he saw in movies.

In the 1940s, Jamila watched films and then recreated the movements at home to music. Since she had no prior experience with those dances, she moved purely based on her vivid imagination.

At age 16, she left home and was invited to perform acrobatic dance in a circus. The circus exposed her to a wide social circle, and she met several Oriental dancers.

With no teachers available, she closely observed rehearsals and copied their movements. Eventually, she began teaching her friends, and it evolved into what resembled a tribal belly dance.

In 1965, Jamila Salimpour got married and became pregnant, and her husband forbade her from performing on stage. But her love for dance was so strong that she systematized her knowledge and named all the movements so others could learn independently. By the 1980s, all movements were filmed and documented.

A brief guide to this style was published.

Masha Archer, who learned the basics from Jamila, started her own movement to demand respect for Oriental dancers. Her group performed only at festivals, refusing to give shows in bars and restaurants.

One dancer in her group liked the style but often inserted her own movements or changed the order of combinations.

During a performance, she broke away from the group and improvised in the center. The audience loved it, so she decided to create a new direction: Tribal. She combined Archer's costumes with Salimpour's dance philosophy, which vaguely resembled flamenco and Indian dance. Music choices were classical or folk.

As they say, there's no accounting for taste. Different subcultures had their own visions of Tribal, giving rise to many sub-styles, each with its own name.

One such style, Gothic Tribal, features "dark" dances, heavy dark makeup, and sharp movements to oppressive music.

Another style, Neo-Tribal, is more reminiscent of Oriental dance.

New Age Tribal is quite different and doesn't closely resemble the original Tribal style, yet it's considered derived from it. This substyle incorporates meditation and esoteric elements. Performers genuinely believe the dance cleanses their karma and creates a positive aura around them.

People without a preference for a specific subculture often blend all these movements and characteristics. This universal dance is called Tribal Fusion.

Today, Tribal combines Oriental, flamenco, and Indian dance, officially known as American Tribal Style.

Learning the dance is guided by experienced choreographers who offer professional advice and help refine your skills. Proper technique is crucial because this isn't just "dancing for yourself" – it's a true art form. If you aim to perform this style on stage, you must take classes and master every nuance.
