Jive Dance: Essential Rules and Tips for Beginners

Life is a dance! And the more electrifying it is, the more emotions and drive you'll experience in your daily routine.

Have you ever heard of a dance style called jive? Jive is a type of Latin American dance characterized by fast, sharp movements and swings.

Despite its brightness and flair, it's considered a fairly difficult ballroom dance direction because it includes many elements – throws. But at the same time, combined with loud, fast music that makes it impossible to sit still without at least tapping your foot, jive can create a memorable and spectacular show.

Nowadays, this dance is performed at ballroom dance competitions. But for those who simply enjoy moving to upbeat music, jive is also a great choice.

The first thing to master in this dance is learning the basic steps. In jive, the foundation is the "chassé" movements. They consist of moving to one side, then the other, turns, and a "stop-and-go" step.

Basically, the dance (basic in place) looks like stepping in place and moving sideways. It sounds quite simple and ordinary. But combined with upbeat music, bright costumes, and a radiant smile, it becomes very effective.

Jive can be danced both in a sporty style and socially. The basic movements differ in these interpretations. For example, the social style is smoother and more compact. In the sporty style, movements are fast and energetic. But the basic in place foundation remains unchanged and fits any music with a 4/4 rhythm.

Actually, learning the jive style doesn't require spending hours on video lessons trying to imitate professional dancers.

The choreography is not particularly complex, and you can master it even without any dance experience. It's important not only to repeat the steps but also to watch the movement and position of your hands. If you start dancing in a pair right away, try to avoid what's called a "death grip."

That way, your hands won't look too tense and unnatural, and you won't lose the overall impression of relaxation and enjoyment of the dance.

In this style, there are several sequences where partners hold each other only by the fingers. During such execution, you need to ensure that the partner's arm is slightly bent at the elbow and wrist.

Otherwise, when you straighten your arm, the movement will reach the forearm. This not only contradicts technique and creates an ugly visual picture but can also be traumatic – you can damage ligaments and tendons during intense movement.

Add more plasticity to your dance. That doesn't mean you need to bend like a willow in the wind. Just make your fingers and certain body parts soft so that the choreography is smoother and flows with the music.

By choosing the jive style, you'll get a lot of positive emotions, drive, and energy. While enjoying the choreography process, this feeling will be transmitted to your audience, and they will also take pleasure in watching you perform jive.
