Regular practice is essential to master any dance style. If you want to learn West Coast Swing quickly, you should attend classes almost daily; otherwise, progress will be slow.
To accelerate your learning, follow these tips:
- First, find a suitable partner. A good partner is key to success. If they already have dance experience, that's even better – together you can learn the fundamentals more easily.
- West Coast Swing is a smooth and elegant dance. To perform it beautifully, you need to let go of tension and inhibitions. If you already move fluidly, skip this step. For others, here are tips to achieve smooth movements:
- The next tip is simple and obvious: listen to your dance instructor. A good teacher will help you relax and achieve the desired lightness in movement.
- Play suitable music at home and try moving to it. Your movements can be chaotic – the key is to relax, feel the music and its rhythm. Try not to lose the beat. Move not only your legs but also your arms, torso, and head.
- Lift your feet off the floor. Take small or large steps – don't be afraid to lift your feet. The goal is to fully relax, feel no discomfort while moving, merge with the music, and think about how great it feels rather than how it looks.
Dance involves close proximity to your partner, but not everyone is mentally or physically ready for that. Before dancing, chat with your partner – talk not only about dance but also about yourselves. Get to know each other a bit to avoid feeling stiff and tense during movements.
If you're not friends with rhythm, it's time to become friends
- First, start listening to music more often and more attentively. Listen to each instrument. Rock and hip-hop are especially helpful for feeling the rhythm.
- Try to anticipate when the next beat will sound.
- Learn to identify when a new measure begins – they usually stand out clearly.
- Imagine you are a drummer and tap the rhythm on your knee.
- Try the same with West Coast Swing dance moves to a suitable melody.
After training in the studio, repeat all the steps you learned at home. Spend at least an hour on this. Choose appropriate music and practice on your own – this will reinforce the exercises. Try not to miss any training sessions.
With intensive practice, it will take about a month to learn the basics of the dance. You'll then be able to visit dance clubs and show off your skills.
To become experienced, you need to practice a lot, improve constantly, and learn new things about the dance. The more you dance, the faster you'll become a professional. Don't miss any class or themed party.
