Flamenco is a passionate Spanish dance full of emotion. Many think it's one genre, but it's actually diverse. Learn how to choose the right flamenco partner.
Flamenco is a bright and emotional Spanish dance, full of passion and contrasting feelings. There is a common misconception that flamenco is a single, narrow genre.
In reality, this is far from the truth. The word 'flamenco' actually encompasses three independent art forms: dance, music, and singing (all connected by certain stylistic features).
The dance section, in turn, is not limited to one type. It includes a whole range of dance styles, each with its own unique characteristics, rules, and signature movements.
For which types of flamenco is a partner needed?
As mentioned above, flamenco has many varieties. Primarily, it is of course a solo dance (that's how it was performed in ancient times), so most styles do not involve a partner. Yes, that's not a typo! Men can also confidently come to flamenco classes and dance this amazing dance (there is even a separate style called 'farruca' that is performed only by men).
But despite this, some flamenco dances do allow for a partner. In most cases, these are more modern genres, such as flamenco jazz or flamenco pop, which involve group and duet performances (in other words, a partner is required for stylized dances).
Most often, such numbers are considered experiments in the field of dance art, and surprisingly, always successful! After all, the interaction between a man and a woman on stage is the most effective way to convey the passionate and emotional character of the dance to the audience.
Where and how to find a partner?
Nowadays, anyone with a gadget and internet access has all the information at their fingertips. The simplest and fastest way to find a flamenco partner is to post an ad on a relevant website. It's important to consider the prospective partner's height, age, and dance experience (it is recommended to choose someone with a skill level higher than yours).
There is also another option: looking for a partner at your dance club or choreography school. In that case, your coach will likely help you, as they understand these matters better and definitely won't give bad advice. Don't forget that you'll be spending a lot of time with your dance partner, so it's important to find common ground.
This will allow you to have productive sessions that bring you joy. If you and your partner share a common goal, listen to each other's opinions, and feel comfortable, you will definitely be able to establish a good workflow!
Thus, flamenco generally does not require a partner and is a solo performance. However, if desired, it is perfectly acceptable to create a duet in this style, as the passionate and fiery dance becomes even brighter and more impressive when performed as a pair.
