How to Choose Clothes and Shoes for Stretching

Stretching exercises not only help keep your body in shape but also prolong your youth. It's more than just muscle stretching—it's a comprehensive system for achieving both aesthetic and therapeutic effects.

For example, women can get rid of stubborn cellulite, while "gym rats" can increase their range of motion and reduce the risk of micro-injuries. Plus, regular stretching boosts immunity, improves posture, relieves nervous tension, and eliminates back pain.

But when heading to a stretching class, you need to carefully choose your outfit. The most important thing is that it doesn't restrict or hinder movement. It should be stretchy, loose, breathable, warm but not overheating. Opt for natural materials with a small addition of synthetic fibers for elasticity.

The ideal ratio is 80-90% natural fibers and 10-20% synthetics. And of course, the clothes must fit you properly. A workout is not the place to motivate yourself with a smaller size. For footwear, choose something light and soft.

There are several requirements your workout wear should meet. Fabrics must allow moisture (sweat) to evaporate to prevent bacterial buildup. Hygroscopic materials work well for this—they also hide underarm stains. To test fabric, dampen a sponge, press it against the top or T-shirt, and see how long it takes for the moisture to evaporate.

Don't forget to wash your clothes after exercise. Regular powder isn't ideal for special fabrics—it doesn't dissolve well and leaves stains. It can also cause allergic reactions, which you'd rather avoid. Use a special gel detergent instead; it refreshes and cleans thoroughly.

Here are a few basic outfit combinations for stretching to feel comfortable and confident:

— Sports leggings and a top;
— Athletic pants and a tank top;
— T-shirt and leggings;
— Fitted top and loose athletic pants;
— A sporty jumpsuit;
— Wide-leg leggings and a sweatshirt;
— Sports capris and a tank top;
— Elastic shorts and a top.

Great footwear options include:

— Ballet flats;
— Jazz shoes;
— Light, soft, flexible sneakers;
— Moccasins.

You might even prefer to train barefoot or just in socks.

For your head, choose a headband or bandana. If you have long hair, a hair tie to braid it or put it up will come in handy.

Also, remove all jewelry before class—it can interfere with proper exercise execution and cause discomfort.

Pay special attention to your underwear. Choose natural fabrics, ideally seamless and not too tight to avoid any discomfort. However, it should provide good support for the chest to prevent stretching of the pectoral muscles.

Avoid underwire bras. Instead, opt for bras with wide, sturdy straps and minimal seams. The back should be completely seamless. If you're a fan of thongs, strongly consider skipping them during workouts—twisting exercises will cause not just discomfort but likely pain.

Additional accessories that come in handy:
— A thick, non-slip mat;
— A leather strap for hip exercises;
— A yoga block ("brick").

If it's important for you to look flawless during workouts, pay close attention to natural fabrics and color coordination. After all, beautiful and comfortable clothing can be another reason to head to stretching class. So don't hesitate to invest in a sportswear set you love.
