The Evolution of the Waltz: From Forbidden to Favourite

The waltz has a rich history of evolution. Once a forbidden dance, today anyone can dance it. Because such dances bring people together, giving them new emotions and feelings.

Currently, there are several varieties of this dance: slow, Viennese, figure, Boston waltz, classical, tango-waltz, and American smooth waltz. Each has its own differences. For example, some are faster, some have different arm and leg movements, while others are performed at a slow tempo. Everyone chooses what they like best.
One classic waltz is the two-step waltz, which is no longer performed. It has been replaced by a more modern slow dance. In the standard waltz, the step pattern used to be "forward-close-forward," but now it has changed to "forward-forward-close." It may seem that no significant changes have occurred in the step, but seeing or trying it will change your mind.
The two-step waltz was performed evenly, without any deviations or extra movements. The modern waltz opens up more possibilities: now there is elegance, smooth rises and falls. It feels like the partner is floating on waves, not dancing. Perhaps the "rise and fall" technique is the main feature that sets the modern waltz apart from all others.

To execute this maneuver beautifully, you need to choose the right music, because only through the musical rhythm can the dancer know when to perform the technique. The music perfectly complements the rises and smooth descents.

The tango-waltz can be perceived as Argentine tango performed to waltz music. To perform this modern dance, you need to improvise. Lightness, imagination, passion, and full commitment are encouraged. The dance is filled not only with tenderness but also with sensuality. It's a truly explosive mix.

Another innovation in our country is the American smooth waltz, which came to us from the United States not long ago. This is a free waltz that allows the partner to turn separately from the leader. In Russia, it is also called figure waltz. It is mainly performed in exhibition shows.

Today, the waltz is included in the ballroom dance competition program. First, the slow waltz is performed, then the Viennese waltz, which involves faster movements. In competitions, the waltz is considered the couple's calling card, as it opens the competition.
The waltz is also firmly established in culture. In many films, main characters dance it. The dance has become part of modern culture, and it's hard to imagine much without it. Even in schools, it's a common dance, indispensable for last bell ceremonies and proms.

The waltz certainly requires a certain strictness, but allows a little improvisation in movements: a slight lean back, head turns. But steps must be strictly observed: you need to stay on beat, otherwise the whole dance will turn into a mess.

If you don't like strictness, the tango-waltz is ideal for you. Improvisation is always welcome in this style.

It's amazing how such a beautiful dance could have once been banned. It was considered unacceptable; at one historical period, they wanted to ban it everywhere. All because it did not conform to the standards of male-female interaction. Now, it's hard to imagine anything without this dance. It remains relevant and has become an integral part of culture.
