Discover the origins of tribal belly dance, founded by Jamila Salimpour. Learn about its evolution into fusion styles like Tribal Fusion, Neo Tribal, and New Age Tribal.
Tribal (or tribal belly dance) is a style of belly dance primarily based on free improvisation. Its founder was dancer Jamila Salimpour.
She learned to dance from her father's stories, who had seen many street performances while serving in Egypt. She also gathered inspiration from various films. Nothing could stop the girl on her path to dance.
Later, in the 1950s, Jamila began teaching belly dance based on her own understanding. Almost a decade later, she moved to San Francisco and became co-owner of the cabaret club "Baghdad" on Broadway!
Having some knowledge of oriental dance, she borrowed insights from her club's dancers about both the dance and cabaret, thus laying the foundation for tribal.
Jamila wanted to teach this dance to Americans, so she created her own school where she taught tribal. Among her most famous followers are Masha Archer and Carolina Nericcio. Masha studied with Jamila, and Carolina studied with Masha. After completing their training, they each established their own dance studios, teaching based on what Salimpour had given them.
Despite being a relatively young dance, tribal has already developed several variations.
