Go-Go Dancewear: How to Choose the Perfect Outfit
Go-go originated in Hollywood with dancers in cages, known for bold costumes. This guide covers rehearsal and stage wear, from stretchy clothing to heels.
Go-go is a vibrant and energetic dance that captures the audience's excited gaze. It originated in the 20th century in Hollywood. During one Hollywood party, girls performed on stage locked in cages. They danced fast to rhythmic music, wearing revealing outfits.
Since then, go-go has spread far beyond America, but the bright, revealing costumes have remained and become one of its most distinctive features. This article covers not only costumes but also what to wear for practice.
As for practice wear, you need to understand that clothing should not restrict your movements at all. During a performance, your body moves in all directions, so it's best to choose stretchy, form-fitting clothes. You'll also need to work on your flexibility, so if your clothing restricts you, you won't get the full benefit of the session.
Of course, clothing can be loose or tight, but it's more desirable to choose form-fitting clothes for several reasons:
- You can observe every movement of your body and correct it to achieve the desired result. Self-evaluation during rehearsals is very important, which is why big mirrors are installed in the studio.
- You'll get used to the fact that every move is seen and performed 'for show,' because on stage you'll face exactly that. Go-go costumes are known for their revealing nature. So you'll feel uncomfortable if there's a big contrast between your practice wear and stage costumes.
As we already said, the revealing nature of clothing for this dance style has become its main feature. Dancers in such outfits attract many eyes, and nobody remains indifferent.
Costumes are made from various fabrics with all kinds of embellishments. Colors can be absolutely anything. Accessories made from a wide range of materials are welcome. Even faux fur can be used for themed parties.
For footwear, high heels are typically worn. This makes legs appear longer and movements more expressive. For regular rehearsals, you can bring any comfortable shoes, but on stage, dancers usually wear heels.
