Discover the basics and key rules of Go-Go dance. Learn essential moves, improvisation, and how to become a confident Go-Go dancer. Perfect for beginners.
Many dance styles are currently at the peak of their popularity, and Go-Go dance is definitely among them. This dance has seen a huge surge in demand recently—it's energetic, beautiful, and even erotic. Many people want to learn this art. To become a professional, you need to understand the rules and basics of the dance.
First, remember that the key qualities of this dance are improvisation, sense of rhythm, musicality, plasticity, and the ability to quickly switch from one style to another. You can't learn this quickly; it must be gradual. You can practice at home, but it's best to join a dance school with an instructor who can help you master the technique.
The dance should be performed relaxed, and even relaxation takes practice because you won't get it right the first time. Experiment with different music styles to learn how to switch from moderate to fast tempos quickly. Good flexibility is also essential; stretching will help with that.
First, decide whether you want to pursue Go-Go professionally or just for yourself. Either way, you'll still need to learn the basics.
Start by standing in profile, then lunge with your left foot. Slowly raise one hand to your face, palm on your cheek, elbow pointing forward. Raise the other hand from your legs up to your abdomen. Then, with both hands, mimic tying your hair into a ponytail, keeping elbows pointing forward. Bend forward, letting your hands glide down the inner thighs, and cross your wrists.
Try not to tense your fingers; keep them as relaxed as possible, ideally fanning them out. Then, arch your back sharply, tilt your head to one side, and place your hands on your hips. Combine all these movements into one fluid motion. Practice slowly at first, then speed up, adding sensuality.
Next, learn hip movements. This won't click immediately. You need to rotate your hips while slightly lowering yourself. For comfort, keep your hands on your waist. Repeat this move several times to make it fluid and attractive. Don't worry if it looks awkward at first—you're just learning.
Step your right foot back, bending the knee inward. Then squat slightly, arch your back, and tilt your head back. Bend your arms at the elbows and hold them at chest level. Freeze in this pose. Then extend your arms forward. Repeat this movement several times. The key is to transition from the inward-knee pose to a semi-squat with bent arms at chest level. Freeze in the final pose with arms extended forward. Next, make a gesture as if showing off your muscles: bend one arm without tensing, and wrap the other hand around your bicep. Then curve your entire torso to the right, shifting your weight completely to the right side. This movement is very fluid and complex, so spend plenty of time perfecting it.
Then, bend forward, keeping your chest facing straight ahead. Imagine you're a cat crawling under a floor. Make a hand gesture as if firing a pistol. Don't forget your grace. Work on eliminating stiffness.
These are five basic moves to help you master Go-Go. Remember, this is a club dance, so feel free to be liberal. You don't have to perform the moves rigidly—improvisation is always welcome in Go-Go. The key is to feel relaxed and develop plasticity and grace.
