How to Gain Electro Dance Experience Quickly as a Beginner

Electro dance is a quintessential example of the modern techno-dance school. It embodies the finest elements of the genre. This dance is highly expressive, requiring active and sharp movements. After all, it's electronic dance.

As a result, the dancer's body is pushed to its limit, creating the effect of an electric shock. Electro dance is quite challenging to perform. It takes years, not months, to even grasp the techniques. But it's definitely worth it.

You can also make the learning process easier and more enjoyable. How? What should every beginner focus on?

It's Time to Release Your Inner Fire Dragon

Before you start dancing electro, you need to feel what it's like to surrender to the music completely—how every sound affects your body on all levels, tactile and emotional. What will help you capture that feeling? Free-form dancing without any inhibitions.

Turn on electronic music and move energetically as the rhythm dictates. Don't be afraid to look silly. Nothing should hold you back. You might end up with jerky convulsions instead of a beautiful dance, but remember—these very movements will lead you to an understanding of the dance and the beginning of improvement. So get clumsy, get wild, and have fun with the music.

Learning to Take Small Steps

If you watch professional electro dancers closely, you'll notice they take small, quick steps. They're constantly moving but barely cover any distance due to the tiny stride length. Let's look at one technique.

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Lift one foot and step it forward, doing so in a jump. Switch legs. Repeat. You'll get sharp, fast lunges. Great, you've mastered that. Now add your arms—raise them up and move them to the rhythm however you like. Do what feels natural.

Working on Fluidity

To avoid looking like a broken rusty robot while dancing, you need to focus on harmony of movement and flexibility. Without these, you won't get far. Stretching exercises help. Here's one.

Sit with your legs together and straight. Slowly raise your arms up and reach for your heels, trying to grab them. Consistency is key in stretching—only regular practice yields results. So find exercises online or get a teacher and practice constantly.

Learning the 'Miami' Step

Stand lightly on your feet with weight centered. First, just jump to prepare your leg muscles. Move one leg to the side, resting on the heel with toes up. Then jump to the center, bringing your legs together. Extend the other leg, with the opposite foot resting on the heel, and return.

Making Full-Body Thrusts

Chances are, you've done thrusts before without realizing it's an electro dance technique. Your torso and arms move forward while hips and legs go back—all in rhythm. Imagine you're overjoyed, with happiness bursting out of you. If you capture that feeling, the dance will come naturally.

Learning to Move to the Beat

Everything that happens during the dance is not random. The dancer feels the rhythm and moves accordingly. Otherwise, synchronization is lost and the dance falls apart. Study some music and rhythm theory. Learn to count beats and move to them. To check if you're on beat, record your dance on camera. It will show whether you're keeping up with the music.
