Essential Waltz Basics: A Beginner's Guide to Dancing

Today, the waltz is one of the most famous dances, still performed at various celebrations. Its origins are debated to this day. The waltz became known worldwide in the 18th century in Austria, then spread rapidly across the globe.

Professionals claim that the modern name of the dance comes from the German verb 'walzen', which means 'to turn' or 'to spin'.
Today, there are many classifications of the waltz:

1. Viennese Waltz — the classic version, danced at a fast tempo. Each year, a huge number of professional dancers and amateurs gather in Vienna for the grand 'Vienna Ball' event. Everyone puts their heart into this dance, so watching this magnificent event from the sidelines is as captivating as participating.

2. Figure Waltz — a variation of the 'Viennese Waltz', its name fully characterizes it, as the dance uses many transitions and waltz figures.

3. Slow Waltz — the dance that beginners find easiest. The slow tempo gives freedom and confidence in movements, allowing dancers to improvise. The most popular variation of slow waltz is the Boston Waltz.

Learning the waltz is fairly simple; you just need a strong desire and an understanding partner. Knowing how to waltz can help you in many situations.
For those who want to master the art of dance, professionals advise not to rush. Start with the simplest slow waltz. Once you learn the classic movements at a slow tempo, you'll easily master the Viennese Waltz.

How can a beginner learn the waltz?

The waltz is a rhythmic dance, so it's best to get used to the 3/4 time signature in advance. Experts recommend preparing a playlist for waltz practice beforehand — this will mentally prepare you for the upcoming training and familiarize you with the dance's meter, rhythm, and tempo.
Next, the learning can be broken down into 4 stages:

- The first and most basic stage involves walking the 'small square'. In this exercise, the couple practices proper shifting and weight transfer techniques. They also become acquainted with sliding steps, which give the waltz its smooth and gentle appearance.

- In the second lesson, professionals recommend mastering the 'big square'. This adds 90-degree turns to the 'small square' and a new type of sliding step, as the dance trajectory is now limited to four directions.

- At the third stage, you learn the correct turn, chassé, and change step. If you encounter initial failures, don't get discouraged — with a bit more effort, you can achieve good results.

- The fourth and final stage is about combining everything you've learned. Clearly memorized steps work in your favor. All that remains is to feel your partner and enjoy the moment.
