The history of classical ballet began in 15th-16th century Italy. It spread through Europe, captivating nobility and later the masses. In Russia, it became a national treasure, loved for its grace and dedication.
The history of classical ballet began a long time ago in Italy (around the 15th or 16th century). This period marked humanity's transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, when people started to see themselves as individuals, as unique beings. The aesthetic side of life began to gain importance, and artists were revered with incredible intensity. It was in this environment that classical choreography started to gain popularity.
Ballet emerged in royal courts and was used in entertainment performances for the nobility and wealthy. Everyone took great pleasure in watching refined dancers perform to classical music.
One reason for the dance's popularity was that spectators could join the final acts and dance themselves. This created an fun and engaging "interactive" experience for all.
However, due to limited exposure, ballet was popular only within Italy. Later, it naturally spread to other European countries, first to France, where it began to develop on a grand scale: lavish performances were staged, often on mythological themes.
Over the next 50 years, classical dance actively evolved and gained new followers. Now everyone was interested, everyone wanted to see graceful performances set to sublime music. This dance became not only a form of entertainment for the nobility, but also an independent branch of performing arts. It was no longer performed only in courts, but also in theaters for paying audiences.
Ballet truly flourished in our country. It arrived in Russia in the 17th-18th centuries and immediately captivated people with its elegance. Here it gained immense popularity and became a true national heritage.
Many talented dancers from France and Italy came to our country and popularized classical ballet even before Russians began dancing in this style.
Later, Russian ballet became so independent that people from other countries came to Russia to enjoy it.
In our country, the love for ballet grew so strong that, by order of Empress Anna Ioannovna, the Imperial Ballet Academy was opened in St. Petersburg in 1738. Today, it is the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet.
Today, classical ballet is one of the most popular forms of performing arts. Its popularity grows every year, and this is not just a fashion trend. People value ballet for the opportunity to connect with something truly ideal. In modern times, people love classical dance because they crave something genuinely authentic—ballet dancers are individuals who dedicate their entire lives to the art of dance. That is why watching such dancers perform is the highest form of pleasure.
Ballet performances and competitions in this art form are held annually, if not weekly! Many are international, bringing together people from all corners of the world and lasting for weeks. People's interest in these events steadily grows every year!
