Electro Dance for Beginners: Basics and Key Rules

This dance style emerged recently, in the early 21st century, but quickly won millions of hearts. It became popular because it was not overly complicated, fresh, and energetic. Anyone who mastered the moves could stand out at any party.

Like every dance style, Electro Dance has a foundation without which further progress is impossible.

— Start by bending your right arm at the elbow and raising it, elbow pointing up. Then make a simple arm movement: circle your head with your arm and stop it behind your neck. Repeat with your left arm.

Then do both arms simultaneously, but this time don't stop them behind your neck. As soon as they reach that position, reverse the movement so your arms end up in front—near your face. With each new movement, slightly bend your knees. Do everything in rhythm, try not to lose the beat. At first, these moves will be slow, and that's okay. Gradually increase your speed.

— Now work with your wrists. Bend your left arm at the elbow, elbow pointing down. Your arm should be at a 90-degree angle. Your right arm should cross your left arm: also bend it at the elbow, but with the elbow pointing right. Try to keep it at a 90-degree angle as well.

Then extend both arms forward, straightening them. Your left palm faces forward, your right palm should face your body. Turn your left palm so the back of your hand faces forward, and do the same with your right hand. Now both palms should face forward.

— Then, with a smooth motion, swap their positions—so your right palm faces forward and your left palm turns toward your body. Freeze for a few seconds. Repeat these movements without separating your hands: your palms should always touch. Movements are continuous and smooth. Do them in one direction, then reverse. The slow tempo should become fast.

— Imagine your arms are blades. Raise one arm straight up, fully extended, and bend the other with the elbow pointing down. Both arms face the same direction. Then, with the fully straight arm, "cut through" the half-bent arm.

Then do the same, swapping arm positions. This move is simple, beautiful, and interesting. Repeat it several times. There should be no sharpness or stiffness.

— Repeat the previous move, but change arm positions. Now both arms should face downward. Do everything the same, but from bottom to top. If you've mastered the previous move, this one should pose no problem at all.

— Don't forget your legs. They shouldn't be constantly straight. Dancers usually bend their knees in time with the arm movements. Relax your legs as much as possible; you can even forget about them. They may bend automatically once you get into the groove. Plus, you'll feel much more comfortable dancing than with perfectly straight legs.

The key is to relax while dancing. You should fully give yourself to the dance, not think about when to bend your legs. Just feel the dance and the music, and the movements will come naturally.

Electro Dance is great because it's easy to learn. You don't need to attend special choreography courses or anything else to pick up this modern dance style. It's enough to bend your arms and legs correctly and move to the rhythm of the music.
