Let's Talk About Dance Castings?
What do dance project or troupe castings mean to you? A test of skills? A new level? What should you bring? Tips on technique, artistry, and live auditions.
What do castings for dance projects or dance troupes mean to you? A test of your abilities? A step up to the next level? And what do you need to "bring along"?
First, technique is a tool that opens up many opportunities you wouldn't have without it. It helps prevent injuries and keeps you in control while executing movements.
However, technique can't always help you without its "main partner" — artistry, which is the second essential "element."
Suppose the casting is done via video submission? Can all the above be seen on video? Yes, most likely. Technique can be shown on video, rhythm can be shown on video. Selecting candidates this way is much simpler than conducting a large audition.
But how you work with a choreographer or director — video won't show that. How quickly you respond to requests that push you out of your comfort zone — it won't show. How you react to criticism or scolding — it won't show. How well you can improvise — it won't show.
Therefore, despite modern technology making it easier to find dancers for castings, the live audition process remains an important tool and isn't going away anytime soon.
Most auditions are so specific that often you don't get the chance to fully showcase your talent and honed skills. However — life is short. When that opportunity comes, the only choice is to take it, even if you ultimately don't know whether it will lead to the desired outcome.
Think about it: the worst-case scenario is that you don't make the cut, but it's still valuable experience — far more valuable than not seizing the chance at all.
You might say no one ever knows when or what opportunity will knock, and the future is beyond our control. Maybe. But what we can do is constantly shape our environment into one where such an opportunity is more likely to occur.
Meeting the right people and working on yourself will help you climb the steps toward your goal. But make sure your efforts are consistently heading in the right direction.
So go, do, dance, work, cry, laugh! Then go home and be proud of what you've done. The future will be a mosaic of all this. It's cliché, but life is short. Unfortunately, we don't fully grasp that concept when we're young and think we have our whole lives ahead.
In life, there are things we do to live, and things we live for. If you're a professional dancer always striving for more, it's safe to say there's always something exciting ahead.
