Dance Attire for Kids: Choosing the Right Outfit and Shoes
Every parent wants their child to develop fully, and dance is a great option. But with so many styles, how do you choose the right clothing and shoes? Read our guide.
Every parent wants to ensure their child develops well-rounded skills. Dance naturally comes to mind! But with so many styles and types of gear, it can be overwhelming. Let's talk about how to choose the right clothing and shoes for dance classes.
First, decide on the dance style. It could be contemporary, folk, Hip-Hop, ballroom, Breakdance, Dance Mix, belly dancing, classical, and more! But here's a crucial tip: the choice should be your child's! Show them different styles, take them to shows or performances, and ask what they'd like to try. Otherwise, good intentions may lead nowhere.
Once you've found their perfect dance style, it's time to pick the right outfit—one that allows full movement, doesn't dig in, and isn't too loose. How do you choose from all the leotards, shorts, leggings, tutus, dresses, ballet flats, sneakers, slippers, and more? And how do you care for them? We'll cover that below.
Dance Styles and Their Dress Codes
It's obvious that ballroom moves aren't performed in jeans and sneakers, just as street dancers aren't seen in tutus and ballet flats. Each style has its own look, both for movement and self-expression, whether in a group or solo.
The key for dancers is freedom of movement and comfort. Ballet demands precision, beauty, and grace (ballet dancers have incredible sensitivity and flexibility), so it's no surprise that training wear shows every detail: pointe shoes, leotards, unitards, ballet skirts, and tights. Leggings are a staple because they're comfortable, practical, and effective.
Jazz is all about bright, bold, vivid colors. The outfit differs from ballroom: shorts, crop tops, special jazz pants. And of course, lots of sequins and rhinestones. When choosing this style, expect a hot, vibrant (even wild) form of self-expression.
Hip-Hop is the freest of all, both in moves and clothing. Cargo pants, heavy accessories, and for girls, low-rise jeans with a light top. The key is to bring your own individuality.
Breakdance clothing should be comfortable and loose. This style is mostly practiced by males, as it combines classic steps with floor moves. If you've seen breakdancing, you know you need hooded jackets, nylon track pants to minimize friction, and vests paired with wristbands and colorful bandanas. For headspins, a cap with a poly liner is essential. It's an intense, energetic style!
To sum up, no matter which dance style you choose, be prepared for hard work. Dance is an art of the body that expresses emotions and character. Love yourself and express yourself fully!
