Cuban salsa is one of the most popular Latin American dances, the highlight of any South American party. This dance has spread across Europe and even Russia, and now anyone can sign up at a dance studio and feel like a sun-kissed, lively Cuban.
Cuban salsa, also known as salsa casino, is danced at a very fast tempo. It can be danced in pairs or in groups. Rhythm plays a crucial role in the dance – they say it cannot be taught because you have to feel it. People from Cuba and Colombia (another country where salsa is a national dance) never count the rhythm, yet they dance flawlessly, performing the most complex steps, combinations, turns, and endless spins.
Regarding suitable clothing for this dance, it should be comfortable and allow the dancer to move freely on the dance floor. Clothing is chosen to emphasize natural body curves, specifically the waist, hips, and bust. Arms and most of the legs are best left bare to safely execute dance moves.
A skirt or dress for salsa should highlight the virtuosity and effectiveness of movements, so light fabrics that flow freely over the upper hips are preferred. Ruffles, pleats, and frills are very welcome in salsa dresses, as they continue the dancer's movement, making it visually more graceful and accenting the dance's rhythm.
For freedom of movement, the dress or skirt for salsa should be flared from the hip or waist. As for length, avoid overly long skirts as they can catch on heels, hinder movement, and even cause injury. The bodice or top should fit snugly. Straps or sleeves that keep falling down will be very disruptive during the dance.
Men should opt for light trousers or even jeans. The key is that the clothing accentuates the figure, as noted for women's attire. Gentlemen are advised not to wear shorts to performances or discos as they look awkward, while ladies, on the contrary, can wear tight shorts to enhance their allure.
For tops, men can choose cotton T-shirts. Synthetic T-shirts promote heavy sweating, so they are best avoided.
Salsa shoes, like clothing, have no strict requirements. Women can wear ballroom sandals or low-heeled shoes (2-5 cm), comfortable sneakers or snackers. The heel should be low but stable, as in salsa, body weight is often on the heels. Men can buy comfortable boots or sneakers that allow not only beautiful movement but also various dance lifts.
Remember that disco-style salsa does not require a specific type of clothing – you can wear whatever you like. However, if you plan to compete, even at the amateur level, it's best to follow the recommendations outlined above.
