Boogie-Woogie for Beginners: Basics and Key Rules

As strange as it may seem, boogie-woogie is a full-fledged sport, despite its interesting musical accompaniment. This dance style truly stands alongside football or figure skating.

The point of boogie-woogie competitions is that the partners do not know which musical accompaniment they will get. So they have to improvise. In trial classes, the pair must thoroughly study all possible movements and learn to listen and hear the music. Otherwise, nothing will work.

It's no secret that boogie-woogie is a partner dance. Competitions are held simultaneously for three categories:

— participants in the first category must be over 14 but under 17 years old
— the second category is the largest in age range - from 17 to 30-35 years old
— to get into the third category, one of the partners must be over 35 and the other slightly over 40. Age is considered only in the year of the competition.

A key rule of boogie-woogie is that the couple must start the dance simultaneously with the music, literally 'second by second,' and end the same way.

There are several basic steps in boogie-woogie: single, double, and triple. All of them must be present in the dance; other elements may also be used if they match the music.

Most often, boogie-woogie soundtracks last no longer than 1.30 to 2 minutes.

Dancers of boogie-woogie have requirements they must meet. Otherwise, they won't be able to dance or enjoy the dance.

The first and most important requirement is good physical fitness. You need to be athletically prepared. After all, this dance is considered a sport for a reason.

And ultimately, if a person lacks physical endurance, they may not even survive a single boogie-woogie training session. However, many come to boogie-woogie courses to achieve that coveted physical form.

This dance is sometimes even taught in fitness centers. But of course, it's worth noting that a person who comes for a beautiful figure is unlikely to become a professional in this field.

The second requirement stems from the first: a beautiful and toned body. But here too, you need to approach it without fanaticism. Just having a fit figure without excess weight is enough.

The third requirement: dancers must be able to perform basic acrobatic tricks, as even in social dances they are quite common.

The fourth requirement: both the partner and the partner must have perfect hearing and a good sense of rhythm. Otherwise, they won't win any dance competition. But if a person wants to learn to dance for themselves, then of course they can memorize ready-made boogie-woogie choreography.

The fifth requirement: partners must understand each other without words and have a sufficiently close relationship (not necessarily romantic, just friendly or at least respectful of each other). Without mutual understanding, it's hard to achieve anything, and especially in 'scandalous' couples, synchronicity of movements is lacking.

The sixth requirement: both partners must have good flexibility. Often both have to do splits, not just the girls, as many might think.

The seventh requirement: at least one person in the pair must be able to fantasize and react well in stressful situations. Improvisation is tricky, and not everyone can handle it. So it's desirable that at least one can quickly come up with choreography.

Of course, all these requirements can and even should be developed not only by dancers but also by ordinary people. But for a style like boogie-woogie, fulfilling them is mandatory.
