“What should I wear for dancing, especially if dance is my life?” This question plagues every dancer, male or female. Here’s how to choose comfortable and stylish boogie-woogie attire.
“What should I wear for dancing, especially if dance is my life’s purpose?” This is the question that female dancers often face. And more and more, men are asking the same question.
First and foremost, boogie-woogie clothing should be comfortable for you. Whether you’re at practice, a disco, or a recital, you need to feel at ease in what you’re wearing.
For example, a woman wearing a tight red mini dress might feel like a queen standing against the wall, but a woman in sweatpants and sneakers – even if it looks a bit out of place – will be the queen of the dance floor.
A dancer once said that good shoes are what set apart a great dancer from a mediocre one. I completely agree. Shoes need to be comfortable too.
If you’re a beginner in boogie-woogie, don’t rush to buy expensive professional shoes. Why? You might go to two classes, decide it’s not for you, and those $150 shoes will gather dust in your closet forever.
For starters, just go to a shoe store and buy regular sneakers. But make sure they are soft and fit properly – your foot shouldn’t slide around inside. For boogie-woogie dancers, it’s especially important that the sole is smooth, flexible, and not hard, particularly for women. Landing from a high lift onto a “rock-hard” sole is very unpleasant.
Back to clothes. For everyday training, don’t overthink it. Regular sweatpants and a T-shirt are fine. Women can wear a skirt, but keep in mind that splits are practically a staple move in boogie-woogie.
Men should avoid shorts and tank tops, as not all female partners are comfortable with that much skin contact. Also, bring a spare T-shirt if you expect an intense workout. We all sweat – it’s natural – but be considerate of your partner’s comfort.
Dance parties: It all depends on the club’s theme. Some dance boogie-woogie in 80s fashion, others prefer 1920s style. Either way, you should still feel comfortable in your clothes.
Women often wear bright blouses with skirts just above or below the knee. Men go for bright trousers that match their elegant bow ties. And of course, a white shirt is a favorite among male boogie-woogie dancers.
Now, competition outfits require a bit more effort. But again, comfort is key – especially at the crucial moment. The ideal choice is a matching pair costume. Is there anything more beautiful than a couple dancing boogie-woogie in perfectly coordinated outfits?
Women usually prefer bright dresses that match their partner’s bow tie or jacket. You can also add matching elements, like patterns or a scarf around the neck.
Since boogie-woogie is such an emotional and vibrant dance, dancers in plain, forgettable costumes might go unnoticed. It would be a shame to lose because of a bad costume, so at boogie-woogie competitions, every pair tries to stand out with a unique look.
