Master the Art of Locking: Become an Expert Locker Quickly

Successful people always give the same advice: 'never give up.' This advice works for Locking too, because anyone who truly wants to master the art of dance can achieve it with the right goal.

The best engine for progress is motivation. For some, it's public recognition; for others, material reward; and for yet others, a goal. If you can clearly define what you want to achieve, you'll definitely succeed.

If you've set the goal of becoming an experienced locker, you're ready to spend your free time training, making mistakes and fixing them, looking ridiculous at first, and finally becoming a true locker.

The most important characteristic of Locking is its mood. Through dance, you must convey that mood to the audience, so you need to have it within you.

Are you ambitious, determined, fun, energetic, and sincere? Then you'll be able to immerse yourself in this dance and spread joy to those around you.

Do you have a sense of humor, friendliness, and a readiness for sudden changes? Then you can improvise to the music and surprise your audience.

Locking includes four basic movements: the point, the lock, the split, and clapping movements. Start by learning these. Once you can execute them correctly, you can combine them freely and add new elements, making your dance unique.

In Locking, a dancer is valued not for perfect technique but for the ability to surprise the audience. Since much of the dance is improvisation to lively music, you need to sense when to pause for a few seconds to leave the audience puzzled, and only then continue.

Also, the dancer should entertain the audience and make them smile. Often, dancers interact with the crowd by performing various tricks. Jumps, spins, sudden arm and leg throws, and any jerky combinations of basic moves are all appropriate.

If you've ever done hip-hop, some moves might look familiar. You can borrow from that style while adding your own twist. For example, Locking creator Don Campbell would add sudden stops right in the middle of a dance! If you come up with something that makes the audience laugh, they'll surely enjoy your performance and feel energized.

Don't forget that Locking is a street dance style characterized by soft leg and hip movements but sharp, precise arm movements. This combination still amazes audiences, who perceive it as a magic trick.

Beginners love this style because Locking is first and foremost a natural dance. That is, when you try to dance as you feel, your body follows the music in your head, and it all looks very authentic.

You should choose music that helps you loosen up and spread positivity to others. The music should be energetic and lively. It should make you want to move, jump, and have fun, not stand still.

Pick clothes that radiate positivity and energy. Your clothing and shoes should never restrict your movements; you need to feel as comfortable and free as possible.

If you have a desire to learn Locking—just do it. Don't hesitate, simply stand up and start dancing. Watch video tutorials, memorize a few moves, and then trust your body. You'll definitely succeed!
