How to Become an Experienced Flexing Dancer Fast

Flexing originated from the Jamaican street dance Bruk up, also known as 'bone breaking' – and for good reason.

The dance involves movements such as wrist twisting, contortions, bends, and arm interweaving. Of course, limbs aren't actually broken, but the visual effect suggests otherwise.

The dance skillfully combines fast and smooth, serpentine movements. Sometimes it tells a story rather than being pure improvisation.

The birthplace of flexing is generally considered to be Brooklyn, New York. The style has since evolved from its original street dance roots into a standalone genre. It has seamlessly integrated into youth dance culture and eventually spawned various competitions and battles.

You can learn to flex even without any dance background; just put on hip-hop or any rhythmic music. YouTube has plenty of tutorial videos. It's best to practice outdoors or in an open space to avoid bumping into furniture.

There's no single way to perform the moves, but they share common traits:

• Energy;
• Fluidity;
• Spins.

This is a relatively young style, essentially a blend of standard club dancing and hip-hop elements from the '90s.

Flexing with your legs means slightly bending your knees and turning with smooth yet energetic footwork. Arm flexing typically involves the popular 'wave' move.

The movement starts at the fingertips of one hand, and the 'wave' travels to the other hand through the elbow, shoulder, and neck. Sometimes dancers simply swing their arms energetically by their sides, while the torso and shoulders move in sync with the beat.

Many dance schools now offer flexing classes. It's best to start with a school, as they not only teach moves and combinations but also how to properly warm up muscles to avoid injury.

The key is motivation and willpower. Grab comfortable clothes and go express yourself!
